Jack Catterall vs Regis Prograis: Prediction and Tips

Jack Catterall finally managed to avenge his controversial defeat to Josh Taylor earlier this year – and now his bid to become a world champion resumes in earnest.

The Chorley fighter (29-1, 13 KOs) suffered a split decision defeat to Taylor back in February 2022 in a bout many observers felt he had won.

A rematch did not happen until May this year with Catterall overcoming Darragh Foley and veteran Jorge Linares in the meantime before setting the record straight with a comfortable points win over his old foe Taylor.

The 31-year-old now takes on former WBC super lightweight title holder Regis Progais (29-2, 24 KOs) in Manchester on Saturday night in what looks a stern test for Catterall.

Prograis has been out of the ring since losing his title to Devin Haney in December 2023 in his second defence of his WBC belt.

He did manage to reach the final bell after being knocked down in the third round, before losing via unanimous decision with all three judges scoring every round to Haney.

Tip 1 – Jack Catterall to win at 1/4

This is a clash of contrasting styles as Catterall is a technical boxer, while Prograis is a heavy hitter who tends to work towards landing his power shots and ultimately securing a stoppage.

Rougarou has a 29-2 record and 24 of his victories have come inside the distance, while only 13 of Catterall’s 29 victories have come via KO.

This bout also sees two southpaws meet and that adds an element of uncertainty, although Catterall dominated fellow southpaw Taylor over the course of the 24 rounds they contested and Prograis has a decent record in that regard as well with a win over Jose Zepeda on his CV.

Catterall is an awkward fighter who is hard to pin down and is well-schooled in moving in and out of range, landing his jab clinically and effectively.

In some respects, he is quite similar to Prograis’ last opponent, Haney, and that suggests Saturday could be a tough night for the 35-year-old American.

Tip 2 – Jack Catterall to win by decision at 4/7

Prograis has more than simply a puncher’s chance here as he moves well himself and has the ability to pounce on any openings or mistakes, but Catterall has outboxed better fighters over the course of his last few outings and should be able to do enough to record a comfortable win here.

However, ‘El Gato’ is unlikely to force an early finish as he hasn’t stopped any of his last six opponents in a run stretching back to a third-round KO over journeyman Oscar Amador back in April 2019.

Prograis has never been stopped and he managed to reach the final bell despite taking plenty of punishment against Haney.

It could be argued that Haney lacked a killer instinct in that bout and passed up on the chance to get the job done early but you have to give Prograis the credit for being durable as well and the most likely outcome is a points win for Catterall.
