Tip 1 – Borussia Dortmund to win or draw @ 7/25
Borussia Dortmund have the second-fewest losses of any team across Europe’s top five leagues.
To put that into perspective, the two losses they’ve suffered in the Bundesliga are one fewer than Arsenal, two less than Barcelona and PSG and three less than Inter – all of whom lead their respective leagues.
This is what you might call ‘title-winning form’, were it not for Bayern Munich.
Leverkusen’s season tells a different story, one of many stop-starts as seen by the seven draws and losses that have them sitting in the Conference League spot, far from where they want to be.
Dortmund enter this contest the stronger side with four wins on the spin – most recently away at Stuttgart against a fellow top-four contender who they hadn’t beaten in close to four years.
Bavarian domination or not, the yellow wall has stood firm this season and should continue to do so, but we’re still not ruling out the possibility of a point shared here.
Not with how competitive these two tend to get when facing one another. And not with Leverkusen drawing six of their previous nine games in all competitions – a somewhat impressive list containing the names of the current league leaders in Germany and England.
What you need to win: The match to end with a Dortmund win or a draw
Tip 2 – Both teams to score & over 2.5 goals @ 11/20
Our second tip is a Golden Combo inspired by a trend we couldn’t ignore – one that has followed this fixture for over a decade at this point.
The last time Dortmund vs Leverkusen ended 0-0 was back in the 2014/15 season; 87 goals have been scored across all competitions since for an average of 3.9 goals per meeting.
What’s more, of those 22 occasions only eight have seen one side win to-nil – and, yes, that does include Leverkusen’s 1-0 victory at Dortmund in the DFB Pokal back in December.
Kasper Hjulmand’s men have celebrated similar big moments all season – even progressing further than Dortmund in the Champions League – but not keeping a clean sheet in their last six matches and conceding 13 goals across those games?
It smacks of a team still working things out following the departure of some key players.
That said they did come from 3-1 down to beat Wolfsburg 6-3 last weekend, which could very well serve as a good omen against a Dortmund team expected to take all three points on the day.
What you need to win: Both Dortmund and Leverkusen to score at least once and there to be a minimum of three goals in the match in total
Tip 3 – Alejandro Grimaldo to score or assist @ 21/5
One of the few remaining Leverkusen invincibles, Alejandro Grimaldo is but two goals away from matching his 10-goal tally from that 2023/24 season – while sitting on 14 assists, not far off his career best of 23.
Either of those will do for this 21/5 selection.
The Spain international is a man in form, scorer of his side’s first goal in last week’s incredible comeback at BayArena, followed by his fourth penalty goal of the season just before half-time to make it 3-2.
He also assisted twice in Leverkusen’s 3-3 draw to FC Heidenheim the week before – having scored in another 3-3 stalemate with Freiburg prior to that.
That’s three Bundesliga games in a row where the left wing-back has either found the back of the net himself or set up one of his team-mates – a fact Niko Kovac’s team will be very much aware of.
Not that it will deny Grimaldo some form of goal contribution with the quality of a campaign he’s having.
What you need to win: Grimaldo to either score a goal or be credited with an assist
