PSG vs Marseille Tips: Le Classique’s Most Crucial Chapter Yet

Le Classique returns for the third installment this season as Paris Saint-Germain look to maintain their position at the top of Ligue 1.

Marseille have other plans – to not only narrow the nine-point gap but to enact revenge on their storied rival following the Super Cup final defeat less than a month ago in Kuwait.

With one win apiece this season, we’ve lined up three tips ahead of what has all the makings of a historic decider and the biggest grudge match in French football.

Tip 1 – PSG to win & both teams to score @ 7/5

Injuries to key players and dips in form have made life quite difficult in Paris this season.

So much so it’s given Lens – a side that finished eighth last season – the chance to dream an impossible dream, having spent multiple weeks at the top of Ligue 1 closely tailed by a ferocious Marseille side with similar aspirations.

And yet PSG still sit atop the table on Matchday 20 – but with a two-point gap that could quickly wane if Roberto De Zerbi's men can get anything out of Sunday’s contest. And oh will they try.

Marseille’s chances of winning the title this year are currently 25/1, but any possibility of diminishing the quadruple winner’s chances of glory will certainly feel just as emphatic.

PSG will still get over the line all the same given their four-match winning streak in the league – coupled with the fact that they have not lost Le Classique at home in over five years.

The very same game that ended in a historic scuffle culminating in five red cards right at the death.

Tip 2 – Over 3.5 goals @ Evens

Whenever PSG welcome their arch-rivals to the Parc des Princes the goals soon follow – as they have in the last three times the two have met in the French capital, including the aforementioned Super Cup final which ended 2-2 after 90 minutes.

Around this time last year, Luis Enrique led his men to a 3-1 victory over Marseille and a 4-0 masterclass the year before that – so the belief that they can take a multiple-goal lead will most certainly be there again.

Just as it will be for the visitors, who enter the weekend as the highest-scoring team in Ligue 1 with 46 goals to their name – three more than a Parisians side dripping in young attacking talent and the current Ballon d’Or winner.

We expect this to be another high-scoring affair far from anything but drama, making over three goals a worthy pick at its current price.

Evens gives you the chance to net decent returns either on its own or as part of your own Le Classique Bet Builder, the choice is yours.

Tip 3 – Own goal to be scored @ 13/2

Our third and final tip is another hallmark of Le Classique: an own goal.

It may seem like an out-there pick, but self-sabotage has played a part in each of the last four meetings between these two – most notably in Marseille’s 1-0 victory at the Stade Velodrome in the reverse fixture back in September.

Marquinhos was at fault for losing his side the game, just as Willian Pacho was in last month’s final, putting Les Olympiens within minutes of triumph before Goncalo Ramos’ agonising 95th-minute equaliser.

Marseille have also had their fair share of own goals with Pol Lirola finding the back of his own net in this exact match last season, and Leonardo Balerdi doing the same in the reverse fixture that ended 3-0.

Will it happen again in what’s sure to be another highly-contentious back-and-forth clash? It’s happened too often for us to believe otherwise.
