PSG VS ASTON VILLA: 3 SUPER CUP TIPS FOR SALZBURG SHOWDOWN

European football's curtain finally lifts on the 2026/27 season with Salzburg's Red Bull Arena landing itself a proper heavyweight occasion for its first taste of continental silverware.

Paris Saint-Germain, back-to-back Champions League winners after edging Arsenal on penalties in Budapest, face an Aston Villa side returning to this stage for the first time in 44 years.

History generally favours the Champions League holders – only Atletico Madrid have won it from the Europa League side in the last 18 years while 30 of the 50 editions have gone to the European champions.

Victory this season would also move the winning club level with European behemoths Bayern Munich and Juventus on two Super Cups apiece; a PSG victory propels Luis Enrique third behind Carlo Ancelotti and Pep Guardiola in managerial wins too.

Let’s tally up our best bets for the continental curtain-raiser…

Tip 1 – Draw after 90 minutes @ 11/4

This is already Unai Emery's fourth Super Cup final – and recent history in this fixture supports another cagey watch for the Spaniard.

Six of the last eight Super Cups have finished level after 90 minutes and four of the last seven needed penalties. PSG's own win over Tottenham last year is included in that number, when Enrique's side salvaged a 2-2 draw from 2-0 down before prevailing from the spot.

Super Cup stats table for both teams

Factor in that every one of the four cup finals PSG contested last season – the Champions League, the Trophee des Champions, the Intercontinental Cup and the Super Cup itself – went to penalties and backing the stalemate at 11/4 looks the logical starting point for your Super Cup betting.

Emery has yet to win this trophy across his three Super Cup attempts to date, losing two after extra time.

There is no such buffer available this year, with the tie going straight to penalties instead, so backing neither side to get it done in 90 carries considerable appeal.

Tip 2 – Both teams to score @ 4/5

A draw need not be prefixed by ‘bore’... and this fixture has a stubborn habit of obliging at both ends recently.

Both teams have scored in nine of the last 11 Super Cups – again, PSG’s win over Tottenham included – as well as in every single one of the last 10 involving English opposition.

The head-to-head form backs that up: in the 2024-25 Champions League quarter-final, PSG won the first leg 3-1 before Villa hit back 3-2 in the return, with goals flowing freely each time.

PSG scored 128 goals in all competitions last season, with 47 of them coming in Europe. Although Goncalo Ramos and Lee Kang-in, scorers of both goals in last year's Super Cup, have since left, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia arrives sharp with a full pre-season behind him after missing the World Cup.

2026 Super Cup combined XI

Villa, now minus Morgan Rogers and Youri Tielemans after their summer moves to Chelsea and Manchester United respectively, only welcomed Ollie Watkins back to training at the weekend but have added Alejandro Garnacho's directness out wide to call upon.

Teenage striker Brian Madjo has played in all of Villa’s pre-season friendlies, scoring four times, and is clear to make his official debut after a Court of Arbitration for Sport ruling last week in the club’s favour if Emery chooses to add him to the matchday squad before Tuesday’s deadline.

At 4/5, both teams finding the net looks a smart play.

Tip 3 – Over 7.5 corners & over 3.5 cards @ 13/10

We’re combining two separate markets here – but both point the same way.

The last three Super Cups have averaged 7.6 corners and three cards per match while each club's own European numbers clear the corner line alone: PSG took 101 corners in last season's Champions League (5.9 per game) with Villa's Europa League return of 5.1 per game almost matching their Premier League figure of 5.2.

Cards, meanwhile, tend to follow occasion rather than reputation.

A rebuilt Villa midfield – with Joao Gomes in for Tielemans – will be finding its feet in a high-tempo tie while Somali referee Omar Artan, the first non-European official to take charge of this match, will want early control.

At 13/10, this double is nicely priced for an occasion that should live up to its billing.
