Eurovision 2024: Who's Taking Home the Trophy?
The Eurovision Song Contest, an annual celebration of music, performance and national pride, captivates audiences worldwide. The 68th contest is currently taking place in Sweden, after Loreen won with her song ‘Tattoo’ last year, with the final taking place on Saturday evening. This year the contest also celebrates the 50th anniversary of legendary group ABBA, winning the competition with ‘Waterloo’.
What’s in store for Eurovision?
As excitement builds for this year's Eurovision Song Contest finale, standout performers from across Europe are ready to take the stage and battle it out for the title. After Tuesday’s semi-finals, 10 countries have made it through to the final, including Ireland (priced at 12/1), who have caught the viewers' eyes by making it to their first final since 2018 after delivering an unforgettable performance of their song ‘Doomsday Blue’ during Tuesday’s semi-final. Their performance left a lasting impression, sparking discussions about Ireland's potential to clinch victory.
Among the finalists, Olly Alexander (priced at 200/1) represents the UK with his song ‘Dizzy’, bringing his distinctive style and energy to the competition. While Alexander experienced a “slight wardrobe malfunction” during the semi-finals which impacted his vocals, the always hopeful British public will no doubt still get behind the Years & Years star with the hope Alexander can pull off a Sam Ryder at the final.
Meanwhile, Croatia's Baby Lasagna has received widespread acclaim for their catchy rock anthem ‘Rim Tim Tagi Dim’. Marko Purisic, the mastermind behind the performance, dynamic stage presence and infectious tunes have made Croatia a strong favourite at 10/11, securing them a spot in the final and setting the stage for an exciting showdown.
Cultural Impact and Significance of Eurovision
Beyond being a musical spectacle, Eurovision holds significant cultural importance, bringing together nations through the universal language of music. For decades, the contest has provided a platform for artists to showcase their talents globally, promoting cultural exchange and celebrating diversity. From ABBA's iconic victory in 1974 to the rise of modern sensations like Conchita Wurst and Loreen, Eurovision continues to shape the music industry.
