History of Style Wednesday
Style Wednesday is also known as ‘Ladies’ Day’ and attendees flock to the racecourse in their best clothing as part of the festivities.
Members of the British royal family are often in attendance and, while Cheltenham fashion is often the talk of the town, it is the BetMGM Queen Mother Champion Chase that draws the most attention on day two.
Originally known as the National Hunt Two-Mile Champion Chase, the BetMGM Queen Mother Champion Chase quickly rose to prominence in horse racing.
The name of the event changed in 1980 to commemorate the Queen Mother’s 80th birthday. She owned many successful horses over the years including Game Spirit, the runner-up of the 1976 Champion Chase.
Badsworth Boy is the most successful horse to compete in the Queen Mother Champion Chase with an impressive hat-trick of wins from 1983 to 1985, an impressive statistic considering 10 other horses have claimed back-to-back wins without recording a third.
The high-flying Energumene is the most recent example, having won in 2022 and 2023. Marine Nationale won for Barry Connell in 2025 with Sean Flanagan on board.
Jockeys are a different story, with both Pat Taaffe and Barry Geraghty winning the trophy five times.
What is the big race of the day?
Style Wednesday is a celebration of speed, style and sophistication with no race embodying that trinity more than the BetMGM Queen Mother Champion Chase.
This is a Grade 1 National Hunt steeplechase open to horses aged five or older and takes place at 16:00. For the latest BetMGM Queen Mother Champion Chase prices, see our Style Wednesday betting odds.
