Haydock Racing Betting Tips
Haydock hosts a fascinating premier card on Saturday and the big race is the £150,000 Old Newton Cup. It’s a competitive race and it’s no surprise with that much money on offer.
The action starts with a 5f handicap at 13:30, concludes with a 7f race at 16:55 and the main event takes place at 15:15.
There are seven races in all at Haydock on Saturday and we have selected our best bets.
13:30 - Handicap
Tim Easterby has had plenty of winners in the last couple of weeks and I’M NEXT is included in that tally. He took a big step forward to win on handicap debut at Nottingham in October, where the heavy ground was no issue. Easterby’s gelding returned to winning ways at Newcastle recently and probably had a little more in hand than the margin suggests. The handicapper has put him up 5lb as a result, but further progress shouldn’t be ruled out.
Selection: I’m Next
14:05 - Handicap
WAY OF STARS came very close to getting off the mark in a Class 2 maiden at Goodwood last summer and has produced some decent performances despite failing to win in handicap company this season. Andrew Balding decided to return to maiden company last time out and that proved to be a shrewd decision, as he won by seven lengths. A 3lb rise seems pretty fair and there could be more to come now returning to handicaps.
Selection: Way Of Stars
14:40 - Lancashire Oaks
David O’Meara’s ESTRANGE remains lightly raced and although the bookies aren’t being very generous with the price, it’s really not worth taking her on here. It would be impossible to not be impressed by her demolition job in a course and distance Group 3 last time out and a similar performance would make her very hard to beat. None of her three rivals can match that level of form and it’ll be a major shock if she fails to get the job done.
Selection: Estrange
15:15 - Old Newton Cup Handicap
There’s £150,000 on offer for this thoroughly competitive handicap and PLAGE DE HAVRE should be bang in the mix once again. Very unlucky in the Jorvik Handicap at York when last seen, Andrew Balding’s four-year-old was denied a run multiple times during the race. He still kept on to finish third, however, and the handicapper has left his mark alone. With some better luck in running this time around, perhaps he can get his head in front.
Selection: Plage De Havre
15:50 - Handicap
AMERICAN BAY won a Redcar novice over this trip in good style for previous connections last season. Making all the running that day, his rivals had no answer when he kicked clear and scored by a cosy margin. He earned a first success in handicap company for this yard at Thirsk when last seen and the return to 6f shouldn’t be a problem. A 3lb rise seems pretty fair and another similar effort would give him every chance.
Selection: American Bay
16:25 - Handicap
Ed Bethell is fast becoming a trainer to watch and he runs the lightly raced INTRUSIVELY here. The yard’s runners tend to improve significantly for their first runs so he should step forward from his latest effort at Newcastle last week, where he finished sixth of 13. The handicapper has also dropped him 1lb since and his impressive maiden success at Nottingham last summer suggests he possesses a decent amount of ability.
Selection: Intrusively
16:55 - Handicap
Lightly raced and progressive horses are often worth siding with in handicap company and Alice Haynes’ ROGUE INVADER makes his debut in this sphere. Improving with every start, he won a maiden at Beverley in good style back in May and 82 could prove to be a workable opening mark.
Selection: Rogue Invader
