Newmarket: Saturday Racing Tips

The top-quality action at Newmarket keeps on rolling at this time of year with a cracking Saturday card to get stuck into only a week after the climax of the Cambridgeshire meeting.

The Group 1 Sun Chariot Stakes (14:40) is the feature and we have selected our best bet in that and each of the other six races at Newmarket on Saturday.

13:30 - British EBF Premier Fillies' Handicap (1m2f)

Class counts for plenty in handicaps and topweight Karmology is fancied to exploit a drop in grade after contesting Listed races on her last three starts. The Karl Burke-trained filly was backed off the boards for the John Musker Stakes at Yarmouth last time but failed to give her true running, with a wide trip after being drawn on the outside making her task much tougher. I wouldn’t judge her too harshly on that, and on the form of her two runner-up finishes in Listed heats at York beforehand, she has an outstanding chance if handling slightly slower conditions.

Selection: Karmology

14:05 - £150,000 Tattersalls October Auction Stakes (6f)

Twafeeg has excellent prospects in this lucrative juvenile sales event if ready to rock on her return from 106 days off. The selection’s defeat of Arabian Dusk on her debut at Doncaster, despite looking a shade green, could hardly be working out better with that filly since landing a Group 2 and finishing third in the Cheveley Park last weekend. Twafeeg arrived with leading claims for the Albany at Royal Ascot off the back of that, but failed to justify her big reputation when finishing seventh. Perhaps she wasn’t right that day and the conditions of this race suit her.

Selection: Twafeeg

14:40 - Sun Chariot Stakes (Group 1, 1m)

A trappy Sun Chariot can go the way of Tamfana for David Menuisier, who has been knocking on the door in Group 1s all season and particularly with this filly. Menuisier tried to transform Tamfana into a middle-distance horse and she acquitted herself well in good races in France before enjoying the return to a mile with an authoritative victory in the Atalanta at Sandown. She was the filly to take out of the 1,000 Guineas over course and distance earlier in the campaign when the draw was against her, and there will be no excuses in this small field. She arguably has fewer questions to answer than Inspiral and Nashwa.

Selection: Tamfana

15:15 - British Stallion Studs EBF Premier Fillies' Handicap (1m4f)

Typical Woman produced one of the most eye-catching handicap performances of the summer when running away with a Newbury apprentice event by 17-lengths in August. She didn’t need to be at her best when defying a penalty seven days later on the July Course, but idled badly when hitting the front and may have found the run coming soon enough. With a nice 43-day break between outings, this daughter of Nathaniel can enhance her profile further on this step up in grade with no weight on her back, while an extra two furlongs looks worthy of exploration.

Selection: Typical Woman

15:50 - Maiden Stakes (1m)

Those with experience do not set an insurmountable standard and this maiden may go to a newcomer. That was the case in three of the race’s four runnings and John and Thady Gosden unleash a fascinating type in Nebras, a daughter of Dubawi who is a half-sister to Sun Chariot contender Nashwa. That pedigree sets her apart and the Gosdens often introduce their best three-year-old prospects at this track.

Selection: Nebras

16:25 - Maiden Stakes (7f)

Similar comments apply to the following 7f maiden and Crown Of Oaks stands out from a pedigree and connections perspective. This colt cost 260,000gns at the Tattersalls Book 1 sale last October and trainer William Haggas landed this with a debutant in 2021. This Wootton Bassett colt is a brother to English Oak and has a lovely pedigree, with the peak Racing Post Ratings of the dam’s seven offspring ranging from a low of 91 to a high of 116.

Selection: Crown Of Oaks

17:00 - Fillies’ Handicap (7f)

The booking of Oisin Murphy to ride the in-form Madame De Sevigne catches the eye and she could be the answer to a tricky finale. The Robert Eddery-trained filly recorded a good time when victorious at Leicester in July and shaped much better than the result when sixth from an impossible draw in a top handicap at York. The first three were always in the front rank and this filly was last at the two-furlong pole before powering home. She caught the eye again when suffering a troubled passage here last month and possesses strong claims down in trip.

Selection: Madame De Sevigne
