Consistency, style and success at the Emmys

The Emmy Awards have long been the pinnacle of achievement in television, celebrating the best in drama, comedy and everything in between.

But what does it take to secure an Emmy win? BetMGM has analysed trends from the past decade to reveal how consistency and style correlate with achieving success. From repeat nominees dominating the awards to the subtle yet significant influence of fashion choices, certain patterns surface that could predict this year’s winners.

Why repeat nominees succeed

Our research suggests that over two-thirds (66.7%) of repeat nominees in comedy categories and more than half (55.6%) of repeat nominees in drama categories have gone on to win another award when they return in a future year.

This shows how important it is to keep delivering quality and staying recognised by the industry. Shows like Veep, Succession and Game of Thrones have won three awards each in the past decade and have proved that consistently strong performances across multiple seasons not only secure nominations but also significantly increase the chances of winning.

Who is favourite to win this year?

With our research showing that repeat nominees have a positive success rate, this year The Crown is once again in the spotlight having previously won one Emmy.

The popular Netflix show is priced at 13/2 to claim another Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series. However, contrary to our findings that favour repeat nominees Shōgun — a newcomer — stands as the current 1/10 favourite, suggesting it may defy the usual trends to win.

In the comedy category The Bear, having already won an Emmy after its first nomination in 2023, is the clear favourite, priced at 1/10 to win again. With our research indicating that over two-thirds of repeat nominees go on to win, The Bear is well-positioned for success.

Meanwhile Hacks and Abbott Elementary, both of which have been nominated in the past, trail behind priced at 5/1 and 14/1 respectively. While their odds indicate they are less likely to win compared to The Bear, our research and their previous nominations suggest they could surprise us.

Dressed for success

Beyond performance and consistency, fashion has shown a strong correlation with Emmy success.

An analysis of past winners reveals that black has been the most popular gown colour among female winners, worn by over 40% of winners, including Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who won the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series award four years in a row from 2014 to 2017 for her role in Veep, wearing a black gown for three years in a row. This suggests that, while talent and consistency are most important, a well-chosen wardrobe can also contribute to the aura of success at the Emmys.

As the 76th Emmy Awards approach, all eyes will be on the favourites like The Bear. With consistency, critical acclaim, and even fashion choices playing a role, the patterns of past winners provide valuable insights into who might take home the trophies this year.

And who knows, the colour black might just continue its reign as the unofficial dress code of Emmy victors.
