LAURA WOODS: ALONSO WAITING IN WINGS IF SLOT LEAVES LIVERPOOL

TIME UP FOR SLOT?

For me, I think if Liverpool win a cup Arne Slot will stay and he probably deserves to.

It’s awkward because Xabi Alonso is available and I’m sure a lot of Liverpool fans would like to see him have a go at that job.

If Liverpool don’t win anything – and that’s more likely than not at the moment – I’m not sure he will stay for another season.

It seems that this team is not functioning as it should anymore.

The performance against Galatasaray wasn’t great and leaves them in a bit of a tricky spot ahead of the second leg.

Ibrahima Konate had a stinker and, while managers can’t account for individual errors, these inconsistencies have been there all season.

It does feel like a change is needed and a perfect candidate is waiting in the wings

BAD WEEK FOR PREMIER LEAGUE

I was very disappointed with the English clubs on Tuesday and Wednesday, to be honest.

Newcastle could have beaten Barcelona but gave away a very late penalty, which would have been hard to take

Arsenal weren’t convincing. I thought they made hard work of what was an easy draw on paper and they’ve got work to do.

Liverpool’s defending was comedic at times against Galatasaray, while Manchester City were absolutely destroyed by an inspired Real Madrid and Spurs were turned inside out by Atletico Madrid.

What a thoroughly depressing advert for the Premier League!

SENSATIONAL REAL BACK TO THEIR BEST

I thought Real Madrid were sensational against Manchester City.

Federico Valverde basically pausing Marc Guehi while he went round him was like watching a computer game. It was incredible.

His three different finishes were all spectacular in their own way – he’s a very special player.

Perhaps most worrying for City was that it could have easily been more if Vinicius Jr hadn’t messed about with his penalty.

I hate those skips they do and, if you’re going to do it, you have to score. He was lucky it was already 3-0 otherwise he would have got a lot more stick for that finish.

Thibaut Courtois has two assists in the Champions League this season, which is more than Jude Bellingham and Kylian Mbappe!

Granted, they’ve been injured, but Real Madrid are lucky to have Courtois; his massive save at the end could be pivotal too

You can never write them off, particularly in the Champions League. They are so dangerous in the competition and they’ve got to be one of the favourites again to win it.
