We are delighted to be partnering with the PDC to sponsor the highly anticipated 2024 BetMGM Premier League. It is showtime for one of the sport’s most prestigious tournaments as eight of the world’s best players battle it out over 17 nights to become the BetMGM Premier League Darts champion.

From Cardiff on the opening night right through to the Play-offs at the O2 in London in May, the world is watching as players such as world champion Luke Humphries, teenage sensation Luke Littler and double world titlist Peter Wright head to venues across the UK and Ireland as well as taking to the oche in Berlin and Rotterdam.

This player profile casts the spotlight on the defending champion, and one of the biggest names in darts, Michael van Gerwen.

Widely regarded as one of the sport’s greatest players, Van Gerwen burst onto the scene at a young age and rapidly became a dominant force in the world of darts. With seven BetMGMPremier League titles already under his belt, as well as dozens of other darts championships, Van Gerwen will be looking to add to his list of honours as this year's tournament gets underway.

Van Gerwen has been at the top of his game for well over a decade, with almost 50 PDC major titles to his name. Though just a fraction of his career success, the career highlights below underline just what a force he is in the world of professional darts.

  1. Multiple PDC World Championships – Van Gerwen has been PDC world champion three times. From becoming the youngest champion after his 2014 victory over Peter Wright, Van Gerwen has gone on to win the tournament on two further occasions (2017 and 2019)
  2. BetMGM Premier League success – He is a seven-time league champion. His first triumph in 2013 was followed by four consecutive titles between 2016 and 2019 as the Dutchman continued to dominate darts. He went on to land back-to-back triumphs in 2022 and 2023
  3. World Number 1 Ranking – Van Gerwen has spent of his career ranked as the best darts player in the world. Having prolonged periods occupying the top spot showcases his ability to sustain his performance at the highest level over a number of years, backing this up with his wealth of titles

  • A real giant of the game, Van Gerwen has 10 televised nine-dart finishes and over 20 in PDC events overall. The Dutchman was the first player to throw a televised perfect leg that didn’t begin with a 180 – opting for an opening score of 174
  • Van Gerwen enjoyed an incredible seven-year spell as world number one, being ranked as the best player in the world for 2,559 days from 2014 to 2021
  • He became the first and only player to win the full set of PDC televised titles when he won the 2019 Champions League in Leicester.
  • A sign of Van Gerwen’s incredible BetMGM Premier League performances is his world record for a televised match average set when he achieved 123.40 against Michael Smith on night four of the 2016 edition
