The benchmark. The legend. The most successful player in Premier League history.

Michael van Gerwen returns for the 2026 BetMGM Premier League campaign as the undisputed king of the competition.

With a record seven titles to his name, Mighty Mike is the yardstick by which all others are measured on the Thursday night stage.

While a new generation headlined by Luke Littler and Luke Humphries have seized the top spots in the rankings, Van Gerwen fired a major reminder to the entire sport by ending his two-year wait for a premier event title at the 2025 World Series of Darts Finals.

After failing to make Play-Offs Night for only the second time in his career last season, and being displaced as Dutch number one by new Premier League rival Gian van Veen, the question for 2026 is simple: can the Green Machine use that frustration to fuel a charge to an unprecedented eighth Premier League crown?

Below you can find out more about Van Gerwen ahead of the blockbuster 17-night 2026 BetMGM Premier League Darts season, which kicks off on 5th February at the Utilita Arena in Newcastle.

Michael van Gerwen History

With 68 televised PDC titles, Van Gerwen has long since cemented his place as one of the sport’s all-time greats.

With a peak built on explosive scoring and devastating finishing, MVG held the world number one spot for seven years.

The Dutchman is a three-time PDC world champion (2014, 2017, 2019) and a seven-time Premier League winner who kept a stranglehold on the event between 2016 and 2019 before winning again in 2022 and 2023.

More recently Van Gerwen has demonstrated a different kind of greatness: resilience.

Injuries, dental surgery and a two-year major title drought have all tested his mettle over the past few years but, through it all, the Green Machine has managed to continue to add to his trophy cabinet with formidable regularity.

A seventh World Championship final appearance, 38th European Tour win and 49th major event title characterised the Dutchman’s 2025 – who would count him out of adding to those numbers with an eighth Premier League in 2026?
