How Night 1 Unfolded in Newcastle
The atmosphere was electric as BetMGM Premier League Darts roadshow rolled into a packed Utilita Arena in Newcastle for opening night.
The evening was defined by upset wins and tight contests, with Jonny Clayton’s superb 109 average in victory over Josh Rock and Littler’s first-round exit to Van Veen setting the tone for a dramatic conclusion.
Ultimately, it was Van Gerwen who stole the show.
After beating Stephen Bunting and a hard-fought semi-final victory over defending titlist Luke Humphries he faced Van Veen, the man who recently replaced him as Dutch number one, in the final.
A clinical display of finishing throughout the evening – his checkout percentage across all three games sat at almost 53% – saw him close out his first nightly victory since 2024 to claim the first five points of the season and the £10,000 winner's bonus.
